The appeal of Biker Babes
Post date: 2006-09-03
Beautiful women seem to be naturally attracted to motorcycles.
But then again, bikers are probably all attracted to beautiful women as well. Put two and two together and you’ll soon realize why there are so many biker babes around these days. I’m not only speaking from my own experience but I’ve noticed that everybody takes it as a generic rule: you’ve got a hot bike and some gym-time under your belt you’re bound to end up with a hot bikerbabe sitting behind you and hangin’ on to you like there’s no tomorrow in a flash.
The term ‘Biker Chick’, though, is not only used in reference to women who are basically the girlfriend of this or that or the other biker. There are many different breeds of biker ladies out there and they all have one thing in common: We just love ‘em all , don’t we?
Another type of biker female is the one that doesn’t consider she belongs in the back seat. These ladies ride, and not only that, but some of them ride on par with the men. Despite the fact that motorcycle riding, especially on a competition level is still considered a more than predominantly male sport, after the first shy steps taken by the likes of Katya Poensgen in the Word Motorcycle Championship’s 250 cc class, women bikers are increasingly making a statement about how serious they really are when it comes to this type of motorsport. Wowing audiences with extreme antics pulled on two wheels is no longer a male only privilege.
Biker women like Maria Costello, Jenny Tinmouth, Lucy Stone, Suzie Grayson are part of a new wave of female racers for whom success is not an unattainable desert mirage anymore. In 2005 Maria Costello took 3rd place in the Ultra Lightweight category, in the Isle of Man Grand Prix.
In a racing world in which testosterone seems like a type of driving force that is a must have for anybody aiming for victory, many of these women bikers get their initiation through a boyfriend who races or another male relative.
Another type of biker babe is the one we all find ourselves staring (and salivating) at whenever we watch the grid presentation before the start of a motoGP race on television.
These ladies also known as ‘Grid Girls’ are as much part of the show as the race itself. To this very day, however, I never managed to fully understand the entire role of these scantily clad beauties holding the umbrella for the bikers. Are they there to comfort the biker so that he gets over the pre-race jitters easier? Or are they there to pump the testosterone level of these guys so they’re more daring and aggressive during the race?
On second (or make that third) thought they may only be there as eye-candy, so that us spectators, are kept entertained before the action itself commences. Or maybe for all three reasons. Whoever first had the idea to combine bike babes and racing though, probably weighed all these factors plus a few bunch more, when he decided that these motorcycle girls should be part of the whole motorsports thing, to the extent gas-smell and engine noise are.
Last but not nearly least come the ladies who ride bikes out of pure personal enjoyment. They’re probably the most hardcore of all biker chicks with the possible exception of those who participate in races, where they get to match skills with the cream of the best.
These women ride bikes for the same reason we guys do. The sense of freedom, the sense of sometimes feeling like one’s above the law itself (for some), the pure pleasure of the ride.
A little while ago there was a show about lady bikers on Discovery Channel called the “ Magnificent 6” It was quite something seeing these biker women tear down the road in much the same fashion male bikers do. One thing popped into my mind when seeing them: if all the guys carry around what we call “gas-chicks” on the back seat what exactly are these women going to have to fill in that role? Another biker babe, or one of them pot-belly long-beared hairy chaps?
I for one would vote for the biker-chick anyday…….
